Hiring: two food prep and service roles.

Want to join the gull gang?

We’re looking to bring on two new team members at our wee shop on Ferry Road.

About us:

The Gull’s Grocery is a workers co-operative based in Leith, Edinburgh. We are about to celebrate our 2nd birthday, as such, we are expanding to fit more things into our little shop.

Fresh produce and great chat are our day to day. And, we are currently launching our new deli counter, using the lovely things we have in store to create delicious sammies, salad, and expanding our cheese range.

Our mission:

  • To provide secure employment for everyone who works for the cooperative.

  • To work with mutual aid groups and local organisations to help make fresh food accessible to everyone.

  • To pay our profits back to our workers and community.

  • To create educational and development opportunities for members.

  • To promote fair wages and workers rights in the food industry.

We are committed to building a sustainable business through transparency, co-operation, and community.

The Roles:

Morning Prep + serve / Afternoon Prep + serve (2 roles)

Morning - hours: 25 - 30 hours over 4 days + holiday cover.

Afternoon - hours: 16 - 20 hours over 4 days + holiday cover.

Start date: immediate start available.

Pay: £12 / per hour, paid weekly.

Key info:

As we move into deli we are looking for someone with kitchen experience and / or someone who can work quickly and multitask. The team in place loves food but we know our weaknesses (knife skills and speed). You’ll be working with recipes from our lovely consultant chef and using seasonal produce to knock the socks off our regulars.

We move some heavy stock (25kg) - full training will be given and we are happy to have aids / workarounds as required.

Lastly, some lone working is required at this time - particularly for the afternoon / evening shifts as we establish this new arm of our business we expect this to change.

Additional: decision making at the top level, become a worker/owner (if you want) after a trial period of three months. Robust sick pay policy. 28 days paid leave (pro-rata).

To apply: please send a cover letter and your CV to info@gullsgrocery.com with the subject line - “shop team : your name”.

Process: we will be interviewing in person at 124a Ferry Road, Eh6 4PG.

Interviews will be conducted during shop hours and will take place as soon as possible.

Questions will be provided in advance.

Your Role in Detail:

To start, you’ll get plenty of training to get to know the shop and our day to day operations. As a small team we do everything from cleaning to finding new suppliers, reaching out to organisations, merchandising and social media. We won’t jump you in too quickly though.

Committed to your development: We are particularly interested in bringing on someone who wants to run their own co-operative in the future or has interest in the co-operative model - Gull’s is always learning - so can you!

As a trans led organisation we are committed to inclusion - not rainbow washing. We treat everyone with solidarity and respect. We have a zero tolerance policy on hate. You can read more about this here.

We are a worker’s co-operative. This means decision making is shared and workers are empowered to bring their own ideas and passions into the direction of Gulls’. This is how we strive to work.

Let’s be real though, currently the workload is not as equitably as we like and we hope expanding our team will help us better manage our mission alongside the work of a busy shop.

Experience:

Some experience in kitchen work is preferred. We are looking for someone to get hands on with our new deli section and to work with prepping salads & sandwiches. You will be trained in food hygiene and handling so an interest in this area is a big plus.

Customer service is a major part of our work, it’s the best part of our job. Both regulars and newcomers are welcomed at Gull’s like old friends and we aren’t gassing them up when we say they are the nicest folk we’ve served in many years of retail and food roles.

Our ideal candidate will be willing to share their ideas and passions, have an interest in fresh produce, co-operatives, and enjoy a good chat.

Please address any questions to Em Still via info@gullsgrocery.com
