Now closed - We’re hiring, again!

It feels like only yesterday that the fantastic River joined us and brought mega colour, energy, care, and inbox management to the shop. As a co-op we firmly believe that new folk bring opportunities to improve the shop, our mission, ourselves, and how we work.

Our regulars will know it’s been tough for our small team to manage all the shop work and continue to build the community hub we have become. Our goals and mission have only grown alongside our workload.

So we are very excited to announce a new team position is open!

The team on our first birthday.

About us:

The Gull’s Grocery is a workers co-operative based in Leith, Edinburgh. We recently celebrated our first year and are a three person team. In 2022 we were awarded the Somewhere: for us Enterprise Award.

Fresh produce and great chat are our day to day. But, we have big dreams and the desire to create a thriving community hub.

Our mission:

  • To provide secure employment for everyone who works for the cooperative.

  • To work with mutual aid groups and local organisations to help make fresh food accessible to everyone.

  • To pay our profits back to our workers and community.

  • To create educational and development opportunities for members.

  • To promote fair wages and workers rights in the food industry.

We are committed to building a sustainable business through transparency, co-operation, and community.

The Role: Shop Team

Hours: minimum 20 per week split in a fair way + holiday cover.

Start date: immediate start available.

Pay: 10.90 / per hour, paid weekly.

Key info: lone working is required. We also move some heavy stock (20kg) - full training will be given and we are happy to provide aids / workarounds as required.

Unfortunately our store is not currently wheelchair accessible as we have two steep steps to get in.

Additional: decision making at the top level, become a worker/owner (if you want) after a trial period of three months. Sick pay policy of full pay for 3 months - half pay for an additional three months. 28 days paid leave (pro-rata).

To apply: please send a cover letter and your CV to info@gullsgrocery.com with the subject line - “shop team : your name”.

Process: we will be interviewing in person at 124a Ferry Road, Eh6 4PG.

Interviews will be conducted during shop hours and will take place between Friday the 16th of June and Friday the 23rd of June.

Questions will be provided in advance.

What you’ll be doing:

To start, you’ll get plenty of training to get to know the shop and our day to day operations. As a tiny team we do everything from cleaning to finding new suppliers, reaching out to organisations, merchandising and social media. We won’t jump you in too quickly though.

Your development: We are particularly interested in bringing on someone who wants to run their own co-operative in the future or has interest in the co-operative model - Gull’s is always learning - so can you!

As a trans led organisation we are committed to inclusion - not rainbow washing. We treat everyone with solidarity and respect. We have a zero tolerance policy on hate. You can read more about this here.

How we work:

We are a worker’s co-operative. This means decision making is shared and workers are empowered to bring their own ideas and passions into the direction of Gulls’. This is how we strive to work.

Let’s be real though, currently we are too understaffed to share the workload as equitably as we like and are looking for someone to join the team so we can better manage our mission alongside the work of a busy shop.

Experience:

Some experience in retail, cafe, or hospitality is a bonus. We are looking for someone with a keen eye for small details who we can help grow as the shop does.

Our ideal candidate will be willing to share their ideas and passions, have an interest in fresh produce, co-operatives, and enjoy a good chat.

Please address any questions to Em Still via info@gullsgrocery.com
