We're Hiring! - Now closed to applications.

Hey Gull Gang!

We're looking for a new person to join our wee co-operative. Have a read below and share if you can!

SHOP TEAM MEMBER - we are now closed to applications. Please check back soon.

The Gull’s Grocery is a worker’s co-operative based in Leith, Edinburgh. After working retail for much of their adult lives Em & Luna decided they wanted to do things differently.

We’ve been open since February 2022 and are currently a two person (one cat, one dog) team.

Our mission:

  • To provide secure employment for everyone who works for the cooperative.

  • To work with mutual aid groups and local organisations to help make fresh food accessible to everyone.

  • To pay our profits back to our workers and community.

  • To create educational and development opportunities for members.

  • To promote fair wages and workers rights in the food industry.

We are primarily a greengrocers and refills shop but we also showcase local artists, support small businesses with pop-ups and have big plans for the future including events, community dinners, and campaigns to further our mission.

We are committed to building a sustainable business through transparency, co-operation, and community.

The role: Shop Team

Hours: 16 - 20 per week split in a fair way to suit + holiday cover. Immediate start preferred.

Pay: 10.90 / per hour.

Key info: lone working is required at this time. We also move some heavy stock (20kg) - full training will be given and we are happy to have aids / workarounds as required.

Unfortunately our store is not currently accessible. We have two steep steps to get in. We are in discussions on how best to rectify this.

Additional: decision making at the top level, become a worker director (if you want) after a trial period of three months.

Sick pay policy of full pay for 3 months - half pay for an additional three months. 28 days paid leave (pro-rata).

20% Discount at the till.

Experience: retail or customer service experience is a bonus but not required as full training will be given.

Our ideal candidate will be willing to share their ideas and passions, have an interest in fresh produce, co-operatives, and enjoy a good chat.

Your Day to Day at Gull’s

To start, you’ll get plenty of training to get to know the shop and our day to day operations. As a tiny team we do everything from cleaning, to finding new suppliers, reaching out to organisations, merchandising and social media. We won’t jump you in too quickly though.

Committed to your development: We want you to follow your passions. We are particularly interested in bringing on someone who wants to run their own co-operative in the future or has interest in the co-operative model so we can learn together. The Gull’s Grocery is still solidifying how we work so someone interested in worker’s co-operatives and passionate about workers rights in the food industry would be a bonus.

We are particularly aware that as the first new team member outside of the founders we may have to put new systems in place to make the workplace a smooth and easy place to be. We want to make work less complicated and get everyone home on time. We will need your input on this!

Lastly, as a trans led organisation we are committed to inclusion - not rainbow washing. We treat everyone with solidarity and respect. We have a zero tolerance policy on hate. You can read more about this here.

To apply: please send a cover letter and your CV to info@gullsgrocery.com with the subject line - “shop team : your name”.

We will be interviewing in person at 124a Ferry Road, Eh6 4PG. Your interview may be conducted during shop opening hours depending on availability. During the interview process we’ll intro you to how we work as well as asking some questions. Questions can be made available in advance for any reason.

Mostly we want to hear about you.

Please address any questions to Em Still via info@gullsgrocery.com
